University of Messina — A Brief History

The University of Messina has very ancient origins. It was founded in 1548 by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the Jesuit founder, with authorization from Pope Paul III. It was one of the first Jesuit colleges in the world, and it quickly became an important cultural and scientific center in the Mediterranean region.

After the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, the university went through a difficult period and was temporarily closed. It was later re-established in 1838 by Ferdinand II of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, becoming one of the four main universities of the Kingdom.

In 1908, the devastating Messina earthquake destroyed much of the city, severely affecting the university as well. However, thanks to a slow but steady process of reconstruction, the university resumed its activities and grew significantly over the 20th century.

Today, the University of Messina is a modern academic institution, made up of numerous departments and research centers, with a strong international focus and a long-standing tradition in the fields of science, law, medicine, and the humanities.
